What Type of Oil Should I Use?

It is important to change your oil and filter regularly to prevent friction, sludge build-up, and maintain efficient gas mileage. Your owner's manual will tell you what type of oil and viscosity your vehicle requires. In some cases your vehicle will require full synthetic oil. If your manufacturer recommends full synthetic, not heeding their recommendations may cause irreversible damage to your engine. If your vehicle has high mileage, using a high mileage synthetic blend oil will help keep your gaskets and seals conditioned to prevent cracking and deterioration.

Keeping It Clean

Air filters are one of the most commonly overlooked preventive maintenance operations. Your air filter should be changed once every 12 months or 12,000 miles. In dustier climates it should be changed more often. Your air filter stops debris and dust from getting sucked into your engine. If your air filter is dirty or clogged, it will restrict the amount of air that reaches your vehicle's combustion chambers, causing the engine to run rich (too much gas and not enough air). If this happens your engine will lose power and will run noticeably rougher. Your check engine light may also illuminate. If you are using a reusable after market air filtration system, be sure to clean your filter regularly. At First Class Car & Truck Repair, we check your air filter during every oil change.

Do It Yourself Roadside Emergency Kit

Vehicle break-downs or flat tires never occur in a convenient location. Planning ahead can get you back on the road safely and quickly. One way to plan ahead is to create your own roadside emergency kit. Your roadside emergency kit can be stored in a backpack, plastic bin, or any other type of reusable storage bag. Your roadside kit should include mechanics gloves, a waterproof flashlight, extra batteries, hand cleaner, paper towels, wheel chocks, flares, jumper cables, pliers, a tire gauge, tire sealant, a small blanket, bottled water and some protein bars. It is also helpful to have a collapsible snow shovel. If you have roadside assistance through AAA, your insurance company, or your cell phone provider, you should also keep the phone number to access these services in your kit.
